Ichetucknee River Estates Landowners Association against the Sabal Trail pipeline

Spectra’s Sabal Trail pipeline wants to cross either the Ichetucknee River or the Santa Fe River in Florida, and a landowners association where those two rivers meet doesn’t want that.

Morgan Watkins wrote for Gainesville.com 24 October 2013, Contracts for natural gas pipeline through Florida get initial OK,

Ichetucknee River Estates in Branford is one of the neighborhoods through which the pipeline is slated to run. Darryl Marshall, a neighborhood resident, is helping circulate a petition that opposes routing the pipeline through the residential community. The petition has around 25 signatures and he expects to have 70 or 80 by early November.

Marshall, a retired police officer, is worried about the impact on local wildlife as well as on the community as a whole.

Florida and Georgia members of FERC’s House Subcommittee

Cathy Castor (FL-14) and John Barrow (GA-12) are on the oversight committee for FERC that had all the FERC Commissioners testify 5 December 2013: the Subcommittee on Energy and Power of the Committee on Energy and Commerce. Shouldn’t they be interested in hearing about the Sabal Trail pipeline? Each time someone files a comment with FERC, the filer could also send it to that subcommittee or their member of it, or their own member of Congress or Senators.

Unlike the other subcommittee that held a hearing pushing LNG exports, the Subcommittee on Energy and Power has the appropriate jurisdiction:

Not only fossil energy, also renewable energy, such as solar and wind. Not only utility issues, but also interstate energy compacts. Not only pipelines, but also the Clean Air Act and air emissions.

Spectra still leaving questions unanswered

Here’s how Spectra’s VP of Stakeholder Outreach Susan Waller actually implements her assertion quoted in the Valdosta Daily Times Tuesday.

“I want stakeholders to talk to us. They have to ask the questions so we can answer them,” Waller said. “Keep talking. Don’t shut down.”

Landowners from Lowndes and Brooks Counties, Georgia, and the local newspaper of record complaining questions were still unanswered by Sabal Trail and Spectra at the 16 Dec 2013 Clyattville Open House, continuing a pattern of multiple Spectra reps not answering questions.

At the Madison, Florida Open House Tuesday, at least Spectra’s Susan Waller acknowledged (after accusing the person trying to show it to her of being “disruptive”) that her company had reported pipeline incidents to PHMSA when the evidence was right in front of her. But Sabal Trail continued to assert, “We have a safe operation”.

Nevermind she just asked “what’s your question”. Then she refused to even listen to the question.

When I asked the FERC representatives at the Madison County meeting how to get Spectra to answer questions, they said file comments with FERC.

Many residents here in north central Florida do not know about the FERC meetings scheduled to take place starting next week. Aren’t they supposed to be posted in a newspaper in advance of the meeting dates? Residents here use the following publciations: Lake City Journal, Lake City Reporter, Suwannee Democrat, Gilchrist County Journal and Gainesville Sun. Where are the dates, locations and times posted?

Sabal Trail is failing to inform the public –Sandra Jones to FERC

Sabal Trails has planned the next open house meetings in Alabama, Georgia, and Florida concerning their proposed 36 inch pipeline during the very busy month of December.

In fact, the one planned for Colquitt County is to be held December 12th at 5 pm. This is the same time the traditional Christmas parade is to take place downtown Moultrie.

I am asking FERC to require Sabal Trails to reschedule this meeting and place an ad in the local newspaper to inform the public. Most of the citizens in Colquitt county are not aware of this project. Sabal Trails is failing to neet FERC’s requirements of informing the public of this very dangeruos pipeline.

The proposal to build a natural gas pipeline by Sabal Trail/Spectra Energy is unnecessary and, undoubtedly, not in the best interest of the citizens living along its path. Not only will the construction of this pipeline create safety issues and devalue the property of affected landowners, it also serves as an extension of the fracking industry responsible for contaminated groundwater in drilling areas. The externalized costs of the natural gas industry are far too detrimental to public health for this to be considered when the potential for solar power in our region remains largely untapped.

2013 –Talk directly to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) that would have to approve the Sabal Trail methane pipeline at the last Open Houses in Madison and Kissimmee, Florida, tonight. Protesters against the pipeline will be out front starting at 4PM.

Why: Spectra Energy proposes a hundred-foot-wide gash through our lands for their huge 36 inch Sabal Trail gas pipeline from Alabama through Georgia to feed Florida Power and Light (FPL) and Duke Energy for no benefit to local citizens and rate hikes for FPL customers. A one-time payment is not enough for decreased property values, permanent destruction, and hazards of leaks and explosions, when FPL and Spectra and Duke would profit forever. The gas comes from fracking in Pennsylvania and Texas, destroying whole watersheds and poisoning farmlands and drinking water. Solar power is cheaper and brings jobs and energy right here where we need them.

Duke plant in Citrus County likely Sabal Trail gas pipe customer

Spectra’s Sabal Trail Transmission wants to slice through Alabama, Georgia, and north Florida to get to FPL and Duke gas plants in Florida. That helps explain the Citrus County Pipeline offshoot tacked onto the end of Sabal Trail’s 15 November 2013 update to FERC.

The proposed interstate pipeline that will slice through Marion County in delivering natural gas to an Orlando-area depot apparently has a customer ready.

Duke Energy plans to build a new natural gas-fired power plant in Citrus County, which is expected to be in operation not long after Sabal Trail Transmission LLC, the pipeline builder, completes its 465-mile link to gas reserves flowing through east central Alabama.

Duke Energy spokesman Sterling Ivey said the company had within the past week received six bids to build a facility in Citrus, and it is keeping open the option to do the work itself.
